Upset Saturday

The high school tournament baseball and softball "upset" minefield was tough on higher seeded teams Saturday.

In the Division 4 Baseball District Semi, Paint Valley entered the game with a (13-14) record against (18-3) Symmes Valley. But, it was the Bearcats who left the field with smiles as they pounded the Vikings 17-7 in six innings.

Big offensive days from Anthony McFadden, Nate Yoakum, Teagan McFadden and Mark Clifford provided most of the punch for (14-14) Paint Valley. Anthony McFadden reached base all five times, scoring on each with two hits, Nate Yoakum went 4/5 with 4 RBI's, Clifford was 3/5 and Teagan McFadden has 2 hits  with 2 RBI's.

Mason McCloy got the win for the Bearcats, working 4 innings in relief for starter Anthony McFadden.

The Bearcats had 14 hits, but committed 4 errors. Symmes Valley had 7 hits and committed 5 errors.

Paint Valley advances to the district championship Monday at 5pm against Leesburg Fairfield, who beat South Webster 7-0.


Elsewhere, Adena won a Division 3 sectional title 4-0 over Portsmouth, behind Ethan Sheppard's 3-hit shutout. The Warriors face South Point Thursday at 7pm in the D-3 District Semis at VA Memorial Stadium. The Pointers beat Fairland 6-2 in their sectional final.

Two of the biggest stories of the day was #10 seed Huntington's upset of #2 seed Portsmouth West, 5-4 in 8 innings. West led 4-0 headed to the 7th inning, when the Huntsmen tied the game and sent it to extra innings, where they pulled-off the upset. Huntington will now face Alexander at 7pm Tuesday at VA Memorial Stadium in the D3 disttrict semi.

Another big story Saturday was #9 seed Lucasville Valley upsetting top seed Waverly 2-0.

Zane Trace fell to Lynchburg Clay 8-7 in 8 innings in their baseball sectional final.


In Softball. #5 seed Waverly beat top seed Unioto 7-2 for the D2 Sectional championship. The Lady Tigers will face Circleville May 19th int eh district semis, after Circleville beat Sheridan 7-3.

Logan Elm blasted Fairfield Union 14-6 to advance to the district. The Lady Braves will face Jackson.
